Erica Axiotis
President
One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is meeting with grateful patients and their families who are eager to give back. It’s incredible to see how their generosity can transform lives and make a tangible difference for others.
In our roles, we have the unique privilege of being connectors and matchmakers. I’ve even had the pleasure of facilitating four marriages in my lifetime—an experience that parallels my work in matching donors with their passions. Each day, I have the honor of aligning our donors with causes they care deeply about, and witnessing the joy that giving brings to them, our teams, and ultimately, our patients.
Leading a team of passionate fundraisers is a joy in of itself. Seeing my colleagues become matchmakers in their own right and observing the impact of their efforts on our donors and patients is truly inspiring. Together, we’re not just raising funds; we’re fostering a culture of giving that makes a profound difference in the lives of those we serve.
In my spare time I enjoy traveling, biking, and watching all the activities of our children Mary and Nicholas.

What inspires you about working in fundraising?
We’re fortunate to be part of such a generous community. It’s inspiring to see donors support others through cancer’s challenges, even without personal connections. Connecting people’s passions to meaningful causes is deeply rewarding, and I’m privileged to help them make a difference.
How do you go about cultivating meaningful relationships with donors?
Building meaningful relationships with donors is the heart of our work. I cherish the opportunity to meet diverse individuals, learn about their inspirations, and connect them with causes they might not have known about. Establishing trust and demonstrating the impact of their contributions is crucial, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have formed lasting connections with so many amazing people early in my career.
What drives your passion for connecting with donors and engaging them in philanthropic initiatives?
Everyone wants to make a difference, but not everyone knows how. I love meeting people, understanding their passions, and guiding them toward causes they can support. It’s fulfilling to help them make a meaningful impact in their community by aligning their interests with the right opportunities.
What is a fun or interesting fact about you that not many people know?
I was my high school’s mascot, Freddie the Falcon. At first, my identity was a secret, but in our small school, it didn’t take long for people to figure it out. I was thrilled when we got a new suit with a fan inside the head—those warm Friday night football games were much more bearable!
What do you like to do outside work?
Outside of work, I’ve recently taken up golf—I'm not bad, just inconsistent. My wife, Brooke, and I have been enjoying transforming our first home with various projects. We’re also lucky to have two wonderful cats, Winnie and Rosie. I never thought I was a cat person until we met them, but I’ve loved almost every moment with them.

At UnityPoint Health, working with the Foundation team enables me to continuously learn and contribute to bringing our donors' philanthropic dreams to life, enhancing UnityPoint Health and improving the lives of our patients.

My parents instilled in me a deep sense of caring for where you live. From a young age, I witnessed them generously give their time, talents, and resources to causes they deeply believed in. The joy and fulfillment they get from helping others has inspired me to pursue a career in fundraising, driven by the same passion for making a difference.
Can you share a story about a donor interaction that left a lasting impact on you?
We have a young donor, one of our Shining Stars, who was inspired to give back after a personal experience at Blank Children’s Hospital. She began by raising money through lemonade and hot chocolate stands. She wanted to see her name on our donor wall, so she worked even harder, partnering with local businesses for sponsorships and bringing her community together through an annual 5K race. Over the years, she has donated more than $100,000 and continues to support Blank Children’s Hospital. She is just one of the many young philanthropists we get to work with, all of them changing the world and making a difference for the patients and families we serve.
