What is Infusion Therapy?

Infusion therapy delivers a liquid directly into a patient's vein, rather than orally. Many times, infusion therapy is provided as a medical treatment or is offered to offset side effects of other treatments.

Infusion therapies are most often used for patients undergoing:

  • Medication for chronic illnesses
  • IV hydration therapy
  • Blood products
  • IV antibiotics for an infection
  • IV immune globulin
  • Monoclonal antibodies
  • Therapeutic phlebotomy
  • Central line catheter care and troubleshooting
  • Placement of peripheral inserted central catheter (PICC) lines

Depending on the type of therapy required, you may need to visit an infusion clinic for a single treatment or for continuous treatments over many weeks, months, or years.

Some clinics that refer to the Infusion Center include:

  • GI
  • Infectious Disease
  • Endocrine
  • Dermatology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Allergy
  • Internal Medicine
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology
  • Pulmonary
  • Rheumatology
  • OB/GYN
