We recognize Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Month in April. Oral, head and neck cancers refer to various types of cancer, including those that arise in the mouth, throat, voice box, sinuses, nasal cavity or salivary glands. In the United States, an estimated 58,450 new cases were diagnosed in 2024, resulting in 12,230 deaths. It is estimated that nearly 70% of head and neck cancer cases in the United States are linked to HPV infection.
Some early signs and symptoms include:
- A red or white spot in your mouth that doesn't heal or that increases in size
- Sore throat or swollen tonsil
- Changes in your voice
- A lump in your neck
- Earache
- Difficulty swallowing
