Purpose and Intended Audience

To provide renewal certification in ACLS by the American Heart Association with an added component specific to the obstetric patient.


Prerequisites

Prior to class, you must pass the Pre-course Self-Assessment with a minimum score of 70%. Go to www.eLearning.heart.org/course/423 to access the required Pre-Course Assessment. Please print your score and email a copy to melanie.hermann@unitypoint.org at least one week prior to class time.


If not received one week prior, you will be dropped from the class and billed a $25 administrative fee.

It is essential that you bring an American Heart Association ACLS Provider Manual with you to class.


Objectives

On completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Define systems of care
  2. Apply the BLS Assessment, Primary Assessment, and Secondary Assessment sequences for systematic evaluation of adult patients
  3. Discuss how using rapid response teams (RRTs) or medical emergency teams (METs) may improve patient outcomes
  4. Discuss early recognition and management of ACS, including appropriate disposition
  5. Discuss early recognition and management of stroke, including appropriate disposition
  6. Recognize bradycardia and tachycardia that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
  7. Perform early management of bradycardia and tachycardia that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
  8. Model effective communication as a member or leader of a high-performance team
  9. Recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
  10. Recognize respiratory arrest
  11. Perform early management of respiratory arrest
  12. Recognize cardiac arrest
  13. Perform prompt, high-quality BLS, which includes prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early automated external defibrillator (AED) use
  14. Perform early management of cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post-cardiac arrest care
  15. Evaluate resuscitative efforts during cardiac arrest by continually assessing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) quality, monitoring the patient’s physiologic response, and delivering real-time feedback to the team
  16. Discuss the application of ACLS to the obstetric patient and identify considerations necessary for this population
  17. Identify physiological differences in the obstetric patient

Continuing Education Credits

No continuing education credit will be awarded for this course.

The American Heart Association will issue a card verifying the successful completion of the course. Expiration of the verification will occur two years from the date of issue.


Refund Policy

Blank Children’s Hospital reserves the right to cancel the program due to insufficient enrollment or inclement weather. In this event, you will be notified and your entire registration fee refunded.


Cancellation Policy

Due to the high demand for this course, a processing fee of $30 will be retained for cancellations less than 5 business days prior to the course. Please email Melanie.hermann@unitypoint.org to cancel.
