About Obstetricians and Gynecologists
An Obstetrician and Gynecologist (OB/GYN) is a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Obstetrics is the medical discipline focusing on pregnancy and childbirth, and gynecology is the general care and management of the female reproductive system. OB/GYNs are usually well-versed in both areas.
An OB/GYN screens for diseases including cancers of the breasts, cervix, uterus, vagina and surrounding area. They also diagnose and treat female reproductive health issues that include menstrual issues, diseases of the breasts, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, as well as fertility problems, and premenstrual syndrome and menopausal symptoms.
An OB/GYN is a specialist who is also responsible for helping women have healthy pregnancies and healthy newborns. They perform surgical procedures such as C-sections and hysterectomies.
